Hello friends, If last week’s paranormal pick was a tad too brutal, then this week’s recommendation might be better up your alley. This Sundance favorite is more a psychological thriller than it is a horror film, but we still felt a bit of a chill with its depiction of the relationship between a celebrity and their fan. Have a happy weekend! RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEKLurker📺 Streaming on Mubi 🍅 rating: 95% Let’s set the scene: You’re bored at work, when suddenly, a musician walks into the building. And it’s not just any pop star– it’s that underrated artist you’ve been listening to, hoping that one day, they’ll make it big. What do you do then? In Lurker, Matthew befriends his favorite artist Oliver by playing one of his underrated tracks in store. It works, and he ends up being pulled into the afterparties, the album shoots, and even the tour. This parasocial relationship isn’t a new topic in cinema. However, unlike the romance of the iconic Notting Hill or the horror of Emmy-nominated Swarm, this thriller takes more notes from the Hollywood classic All About Eve, albeit with a chill low-fi soundtrack in place of Broadway. And rather than the influencer lifestyles of Ingrid Goes West, Matthew is sucked into the LA music scene, which puts in him a place where he doesn’t compete directly with Oliver, but instead places him just by his side.
