The sky's the limit for residential developers

The only way is up for residential schemes these days it seems - and the higher they go the better if plans emerging in the Midlands are anything to go by.

Birmingham city centre could soon have two skyscrapers dwarfing traditional housing schemes, with Mark and Hub teaming up on one towering project and Court Collaboration and Pension Insurance Corporation striking up a partnership on the other.

Work on the latter's scheme - One Eastside - will start this month, following a £200m funding deal for a two-building, 16-storey and 51-storey project, a figure which would make the second building the tallest in Birmingham, surpassing the BT Tower.

Meanwhile at the moment, residential developer Hub and real estate investment manager Mark's plans for a 48-storey apartment tower is just at the planning stages, but they say 2 Snow Hill Plaza will "provide high-quality homes in the midst of one of Birmingham's busiest commercial districts, giving residents easy access to all that the city has to offer."

A renewed emphasis on sustainability, wellbeing and green credentials has come to the fore in new office schemes unveiled this week.

In Liverpool proposals to construct the first net zero building  - Hemisphere - have been approved by the city council.

The building, which will have space for 1,250 employees, will include collaboration spaces, a wellness studio with yoga classes, a café and  e-bike charging facilities, drying facilities, changing rooms and showers for cyclists.

Read about the Hemisphere (worth it for the CGIs alone) here.

Meanwhile in Newcastle, the former head offices of Newcastle Building Society officially reopen today as Portland House, brand new workspace that promotes productivity, sustainability and wellbeing. New features include a communal workspace, bookable meeting rooms, 'living wall' installations, showers and changing facilities and electric charge points for cars and e-bikes. It represents the first refurbishment project for young entrepreneurs James Keegan and Oliver Holland and hopefully marks the first of many. Read about Portland House here.
