From Alia Bhatt to Arpita Mehta, Ivory Brides are the New Norm (al)

It is September already which means only one thing – festivities! We are on the cusp of the wedding season and with the shift in seasons, I have also observed a shift in the way we used to wed. Deep reds and deeper blushes have given way to a more uninhibited sense of revelry. Guest lists have become compact, which could or could not be a side-effect of the pandemic. Weddings are no longer about brides looking a certain way: take Alia Bhatt for example. Alia got married to Ranbir Kapoor dressed in an ivory Sabyasachi lehnga. And shortly after, designer Arpita Mehta wore a similar shade and made a dancing entry to tie the knot with designer Kunal Rawal. Flowy hairdo, minimal mehndi and customised kaleera were some other common themes that shone bright in both the weddings. If you ask me, I am all for the big guns – the whole reds and maroons brigade when it comes to bridal ensembles.

This shift, especially in the choice of colours, was also subtly underlined by the country’s leading couturiers at the recently concluded India Couture Week where, though jewel tones reigned, an ivory, a beige or a cream firmly established itself. And if you too are a keen observer of all things trending, here are my top three takeaways from the big, fat, Indian wedding.

  1. No more the coy quotient: Earlier, it was wedding drama 101 if a bride were to so much as even look up from behind her veil, but now, brides are making all sorts of grand, dhamaakedaar entries wearing sassy accessories and dancing to even sassier songs. The taayas, chachas, mamas may kindly go find faults in the salad bar, not the bride’s vyavhaar.

  2. Non-colours for the win: The bride will wear white? Is she inviting social boycott? It is such bad luck...so on and so forth, these claims no longer taunt or haunt the bride. Ivory, lavender, sea green, peach, the world is a rainbow party for the bride. And since the junta has mostly turned to Hindi cinema for every wedding-inspired gyaan, it shouldn’t be too surprising to see this trend penetrate the market.

  3. Bhaiyya, UPI scan karna: A viral video of a wedding procession in Bihar showed a guest giving money to the dhol wallahs through UPI by scanning the QR code pasted on the dhols. Now that’s called killing all excuse of “bhaiyya, paise toh laaya nahi” and minting digital currency. Even the dulhe ka note vala haar is going digital. This QR code of convenience was also used by a Madurai-based couple who printed it on the wedding card to help guests scan and transfer easy money. Earlier this year, saw a Tamil Nadu-based couple host their wedding reception in the metaverse.
