Our verdict on this week's top movie releases
SRK Soars With Jawan; Valak Can't Jump Start The Nun II |
Here's our verdict on the week's top OTT and theatrical releases. |
|
| FILM BUFFS this week are in for a treat with several titles releasing in the theatres and on streaming services. The three 'biggies' are definitely Jawan, which sees Shah Rukh Khan turn in even more of a superstar showing than he did in Pathaan; Haddi, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a double role, and Anurag Kashyap as the antagonist; and part 2 of The Nun, the ninth instalment in the Conjuring franchise. |

Jawan & The Necessary Pleasure Of Watching Shah Rukh Khan In Action |
JAWAN, Atlee’s seventh feature film, does not move. It runs. Every scene zooms past like the next is waiting at the door. Every moment climaxes before any foreplay. A lot happens too soon. Two characters meet for the first time and before you know it, they are married. Hundreds of people are taken hostage and before you know it, the crisis is resolved. A superstar stands in the frame and before you know it, there are two. Jawan is always in a hurry. It has reasons to be. The film, after all, is telling a story about a country whose name stands endangered, and an actor whose surname stands threatened. |
| Haddi: Nawazuddin Siddiqui Stars In A Bone-Chilling Tale Of Revenge & Redemption |
HADDI is a brave and delicate subject that is definitely not for the faint hearted. Along with portraying acts of retribution, the narrative elevates violence and brutality. Aside from this, the movie does a great job of tackling sensitive subjects like sexuality, corruption, and identity. The film does a fantastic job of presenting the brutal reality of slums, struggle, and the streets of Delhi. The most crucial aspect is that the movie delivers all of these things while also presenting them with witty dialogue and entertaining elements so that you won't get bored until the very end. |

The Nun II Is An Uninspired & Hollow Sequel That Offers More Of The Same |
THE horror genre in Hollywood has evolved over the years and branched out into several subgenres that have also delivered compelling films. Moreover, the genre has been redefined in recent years thanks to films such as X, Hereditary, Barbarian, Get Out and Evil Dead Rise, among others. While the classic gothic horror that pivots around the occult also remains popular, largely due to the success of The Conjuring franchise, the tropes and set pieces in this subgenre have become repetitive and cliched. Unfortunately for The Nun II, it embodies the stagnation of this particular subgenre. |
