Hello friends, As October has passed, fall’s upcoming media slate are now shifting away from horror, though there is still one film that we’ve long been anticipating. We were surprised at the quick turnaround, but if you haven’t yet watched it in theaters, let this week’s newsletter remind you that it’s now streaming. Have a good weekend! RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEKFrankenstein📺 Streaming on Netflix 🍅 rating: 85% With more than 400 film adaptations, it’s likely that you’ll know the basics of this modern classic. A mad scientist takes his surgical know-how, body parts from different corpses, and an electric current from lightning to create life, but ends up rejecting his creation. And yes, Frankenstein is the name of the scientist, not the creature, though many have argued that Victor is the monster between them. This was perfect for Guillermo del Toro. With Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water in his oeuvre, who better to depict one of cinema’s most iconic creatures? On top of his signature dark fantasy style, he’s also a lifelong fan of the story. He’s long cited Boris Karloff’s rendition in Frankenstein (1931) and the 1935 sequel, The Bride of Frankenstein, as his favorite movie monster. This, and his fascination for the Other, makes him the best choice to introduce Frankenstein for today’s generation.
