Hindu Parenting and Prof. Vamsee JuluripresentA guided-study summer workshop for high school and college students, parents and young adults (USA/Canada)We welcome anyone who is curious and eager to learn. Participants need to have their copy of the book “Rearming Hinduism” (2024 edition) as a reference. This class is envisioned as an attempt to make sense of the complexities of the modern world through a Hindu lens. Register and we will reach out to you to confirm your place in the workshop and for payment instructions. All Learners Are Welcome!Parents: Do you want to give your children an education that includes not only “artha” but also “dharma” - in a way that is rooted in our ancient traditions but also creative, practical and responsive to the needs of the present AND to the uncertainties of the future? High school students: Have you been asking your parents about the origins of life, the universe and everything, about exploitation and human inequality, or about the existence of God and the meaning of rituals and the purpose of life? Haven’t you been satisfied with their answers? Are you finding Yuval Noah Harari’s writing on these questions somehow inadequate despite its “scientific” pretensions? College students: Have you been left disoriented by peers and professors who claim to be liberal, progressive, and anti-racist but believe and proclaim the most preposterous racist tropes and hurtful lies about Hindu thought, traditions, and culture? Have you found human rights and the dignity of compassion denied to victims of terrorism and religious hatred just because they were Hindus? If these are some of your questions and goals, join Hindu Parenting’s guided study summer course of Professor Juluri’s critically-acclaimed best-selling manifesto Rearming Hinduism: Nature, Hinduphobia and the Return of Indian Intelligence (new and updated edition published by BluOne Ink, 2024). Details:The 3-day workshop will be held online and will be led by the author, Professor Vamsee Juluri. Dates: August 11,13,15 (Mon, Wed, Fri) Time: 6 pm PST, 9 pm EST Duration: 90 minutes per day Price:USD $50 Learning Goals:American colleges often say that the purpose of college is not to teach you “what to think” but “how to think.” Sometimes, this goal does not work in practice especially for students of Hindu heritage because professors and peers do tell students exactly “what to think” about Hindu culture and traditions through inaccurate or obsolete Western-defined terms and theories about caste, gender, oppression, and so on. In response, many Hindu parents try to get books or enroll their children in classes which try to explain to children “Why do we” follow certain customs and traditions as Hindus. However, there has been very little discussion of “why do they” (Western societies including colleges and schools, non-Hindu belief systems, emerging global political movements for equity and social justice etc.) think, act and behave the way they do especially in relation to Hindus and Hinduism. This step is necessary if our children are to grow up to becoming more than simply defensive or apologetic Hindus conforming to other groups’ definitions and expectations of subservient behavior. In our class, we will use Rearming Hinduism as a foundation to understand how we might apply the sensibilities and ideals of sanatana dharma into a modern social scientific understanding of our past, present, and future and become better equipped to debate and educate critics, well-meaning or otherwise, of our traditions and culture in college and in life. As American higher education becomes ever more riddled with “culture wars” and protests, Hindu children entering college in the coming decade will do well to be prepared beyond their merely disciplinary knowledge to navigate debates and dilemmas about identity and politics their parents and grandparents’ generations did not have to deal with. We encourage students, young adults and parents to enrol for the course. Our class will bring parents, children, young adults, and professors together in a unique and unforgettable experience that will serve as a foundation for a victorious future, in dharma, and for dharma.
