| | Mayor issues update on Leicester market redevelopment | | | | | Leicester Market's redevelopment is expected to take a big step forwards "early in the new year". The regeneration of the city's 700-year-old market has not progressed as planned since proposals were first put forward in September 2022. The original scheme would have seen the whole square return to being used as a market, with the old wooden stalls replaced, sections of the roof taken away to create a more open space and the café relocated and expanded.However, this was halted in May when city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby put forward proposals to keep the space clear and relocate market traders to a new home in the city. Sir Peter said the removal of the market's roof had revealed the "huge potential" of the space formerly occupied by the stalls as a potential events space and opened up views of the historic buildings lining the square.The latest plans suggested using the square as a shared space, which would allow the market to return to the traders' favoured site. The mayor said council officers were currently in the process of pulling together and analysing the responses to the consultation.However, he said a "first look" at those suggested there was "overwhelming support for the proposals". | | New details released over plan for more than 2,000 homes | | | | | Fresh plans have been released for more than 2,000 new homes on sprawling land off the A52 in Nottinghamshire. Primary schools, open spaces and sports pitches are also among the features of a proposed development known as Gamston Fields. The plans cover agricultural land situated east of Gamston and north of Tollerton, bordered by Tollerton Lane and the A52, and are the first phases of a wider housing project.The Gamston Fields development itself is expected to comprise of 2,250 houses, a hot food takeaway, retail shop and children's play areas.
