Hi, Madison! Welcome to cuffing season. Speed dating events are on our radar this month. We also tracked down some fall fashion inspiration by chatting with a local "cool art teacher" and by looking to Wisconsin's iconic state animal: the badger. If all this puts you in the mood to update your seasonal wardrobe, check out four new shops opening at Hilldale in late 2024 and 2025.

Something our editors are obsessed with this month

Crystal-clear ice returns to Madison

If you can see straight through to the bottom of your cocktail, it might be one of Mike McDonald's ice cubes in your glass. McDonald, the bar manager at State Line Distillery and a bar consultant, moonlights as a craft cocktail ice maker. When he first started out, he was hand-carving cubes, now he's creating five different shapes using a bandsaw. He works with more than 30 bars right now in Madison and Milwaukee, and his product, Wisco Ice Co., is on store shelves at five locations: State Line, University Avenue's Steve's Liquor | Beer | Wine, The Deliciouser, Alimentari and Waterford Wine & Spirits. Place one of these cubes in your glass, pour your cocktail over it and watch the crystal-clear ice seemingly disappear while it slowly melts away. Read more at madisonmagazine.com.

A few things Madison is talking about right now

🐕 Animal rescues offer a different sort of holiday shopping experience
Why bother with holiday deals on the latest iPhone when you could get a bargain on a forever friend — or two? Angel's Wish Pet Adoption and Resource Center's "Fall Feline Clearance" sale — adopt one kitten, get a second kitten free — ends on Oct. 31. Dane County Humane Society celebrates Adopt A Dog Month with reduced adoption fees on its Lonely Hearts Club members, too. Every cat, dog, fish, guinea pig, rabbit and lizard must go (to a loving home)!

🦸 Take a sneak peek at the most popular Halloween costumes
With Halloween right around the corner, Madisonians are preparing their best costumes for the spooky celebrations. According to Google's Frightgeist — which tracks the most searched ideas around the country — Deadpool, Princess Peach and La Calavera Catrina round out the most popular costumes in the area. Interested in some Madison-themed costumes? Consider donning your best electric bus costume as a member of the new BRT fleet, or troll the neighborhood with a Jeep and a ticket book to go as the scariest thing of them all: a Madison Parking Enforcement Officer!

😱 Madison theaters feature both horror classics and new installments
Horror fans rejoice: October has seen the release of scary sequels like "Terrified 3" and "Smile 2," which join "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" as great ways to celebrate spooky season. For those who prefer originals, several city theaters are offering special screenings of horror classics. Flix Brewhouse is showing Halloween staples — including "Dracula," "Frankenstein" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" — the week leading up to Halloween, while Marcus Point Cinema's Slasher Classic Series brings "Halloween" to the big screen from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.
