| | 'Trailblazer' Spring Budget deals set to deliver massive boost | | | | | Business leaders, politicians and civic leaders were queuing up last night to welcome news of a trio of regional devolution extensions, some of which will trigger longed-for developments.
And a key 'trailblazer' extension was the North East deal, which included £25m to make the Crown Works Studios a reality – a major destination for film and TV production which could generate more than £300m for the region's economy each year as well as thousands of new jobs.
The North East mayoral authority and Sunderland City Council confirmed investment of up to £120m towards the Crown Works Studios scheme, helping to leverage £450m from production company Fulwell 73 and financiers Cain International to build 20 sound stages.
Politicians, business leaders and cultural groups from around the North East have been lobbying the Government for some time to back the scheme, with efforts including a joint campaign in which North East newspapers The Journal, the Chronicle, the Sunderland Echo, the Northern Echo and the Shields Gazette came together to call for support.
Leo Pearlman, managing partner of Fulwell 73 said: "Today is a historic moment for Sunderland, the North East and the UK's screen industries. Crown Works Studios will help transform the city we love into a global hub for big budget film and TV production.
"Our screen industries are world-leading - and with this backing, the UK, with the North East in its arsenal, can grow its capacity for the production of film and high-end TV." Read more | | | | |

| | New 42-storey tower planned on historic former hospital site | | | | | Down in the Midlands, a site in Birmingham's Broad Street once home to a hospital could become the latest to house a huge residential tower.
Leicester-based HJB Investments is hoping to win the city's backing to redevelop 80 Broad Street to create a 42-storey tower containing hundreds of apartments and a mix of commercial and community uses. A key part of the proposal is the retention and incorporation of the old Royal Orthopaedic Hospital which dates back to the early 1800s.
Grade II listed, it was most recently Zara's bar but its licence was revoked in 2019 following a string of violent incidents and the building was placed on the market in autumn 2021.
According to a newly submitted planning application, HJB Investments wants to demolish non-listed structures at the site, erect a brand new tower containing 300 one and two-bedroom apartments for rent only, with the first six floors located immediately behind the listed complex.
Proposed amenities for residents include a cinema, games room, co-working lounge, gym and nursery and 300 secure cycle spaces. Read Tamlyn Jones' story on the plans on the 'read more' link below.
