It’s not the near sweep that Oppenheimer had, but ABC certainly has something to celebrate out of Sunday night’s Academy Awards. With the final numbers in, 19.5M viewers tuned in to watch the 2024 Oscars, according to Nielsen data. That’s a 4% uptick over the 18.8 million who tuned in for the 95th annual Academy Awards in 2023, propelling the show to a 4-year audience high. The wait is almost over. Nine months after the Season 19 finale of Grey's Anatomy aired on ABC, Season 20 of the venerable medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes premieres on the network this Thursday, March 14. The new season has veteran Grey's Anatomy writer-producer Meg Marinis at the helm as new showrunner, succeeding Krista Vernoff. In an interview with Deadline, Marinis previews Season 20 and reveals its theme. She discusses how much we can expect to see Grey's Anatomy star/executive producer Ellen Pompeo, who scaled back her on-screen presence last season. Obituaries 🕯 Eric Carmen, who was the frontman of power pop band The Raspberries before going on to solo success, has died at age 74. He first rose to fame with the Raspberries’ breakout hit, “Go All the Way.” The band broke up, and by the mid-1970s, Carmen moved on as a successful solo artist with “All By Myself” and “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again.” His run of hits continued into the ’80s with the song “Hungry Eyes.” 🕯 Jerry Foley , the former Late Show with David Letterman director who helmed close to 4,000 hours of late-night television and was nominated for two dozen Emmys, has died. He was 68. He’s understood to have died last week as a result of ski accident. 🕯 Malachy McCourt, the Irish-American actor, raconteur and author best known to TV audiences for his long-running role as Kevin the bartender on ABC soap Ryan’s Hope, died Monday in Manhattan after battling a heart condition and cancer. He was 92. 🕯 Karl Wallinger, the frontman of World Party who earlier played with The Waterboys, died Sunday at 66.
