| | Green light for new glamping site on NEC campus amid diversification strategy | | | | | Impressive plans to create a glamping site on the NEC Campus in Solihull were approved this week, as part of a new diversification strategy.
Owner NEC Group got the green light to erect 59 pods – space for 236 guests – on vacant land at the Solihull campus, which is already home to the National Exhibition Centre and Resorts World Arena, the Resorts World shopping and leisure complex, Bear Grylls Adventure attraction and a string of hotels. There's set to be a tight turnround on construction too, with spades due to go into the ground soon and a target completion date of the end of this year.
Guests will be able to use a new app offering keyless entry and there will be a communal area, woodland and a complimentary golf buggy for transport around the resort.
The planning approval forms part of a transformation strategy first unveiled six years ago, known as the NEC Masterplan, in which it plans to diversify the way the campus is used.
Andy Cole, the NEC's director of property, partnerships and media, said: "We're always trying to push the boundaries in diversifying the use of the campus to support our core exhibition and arenas business. Our latest addition perfectly complements our ambitions to create a competitive 24/7 destination to work, rest, live and play and adds to the existing destination offer." | | Elation from locals as The Crooked House pub ordered to be rebuilt | | | | | Meanwhile in the Black Country, residents have been left delighted by the news that The Crooked House pub will have to be rebuilt.
The famously wonky watering hole was demolished last year, following a suspected arson attack.
The move caused national uproar, with the pub being viewed as something of a local monument for the area where it had stood since the 18th Century. Now the owners of the Crooked House have been ordered to rebuild the pub "back to what it was", with South Staffordshire Council confirming that it had served an enforcement notice.
The owners have 30 days to appeal and the notice must be complied with within three years. If work is not completed within the time limit, the local authority can prosecute for failure to comply with the notice, it added.
The historic West Midlands pub, in Himley, near Dudley, was demolished without permission two days after it was gutted by a fire on August 5 last year. The authority said it had engaged with the owners since the blaze but had "reached a point" where the enforcement order was "considered necessary".
