Welcome to the latest IAMBOB newsletter - our monthly round-up of news from Britain's black-owned businesses. The chancellor has just given his Autumn Statement and as we head towards the festive season many brands and companies are ramping up their campaigns and looking towards the new year.
Last month we spoke to UK Black Business Week's chief executive Raphael Sofoluke about the event's expansion since inception. After a bumper event this year the annual event has announced that it will relocate to ExCel London for its 2024 edition.
While in Scotland the government is backing minority startups with £2.9m investment. A total of 42 recipients are set to share £1.6m through the Ecosystem Fund, while 20 projects will receive £1.3m through a new Pre-Start Pathways Fund.
Elsewhere in Scotland, Insider spoke with Myrtle Dawes, chief executive of the Net Zero Technology Centre. Ms Dawes' first job was as an offshore engineer for BP. She was also one of the first women to work on the North Sea rigs. She spoke to us about her career thus far and Scotland's energy transition.
While in Bristol Black-led racial justice organisation, Black South West Network, spoke to BusinessLive about the work it is doing to support Black and minortitised business leaders and entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground and grow.
Enterprise development manager Derek Tanner and the chair of BSWN and partner at Knights, Martino Burgess explained how between 2022 and 2023, BSWN delivered five intensive programmes, secured £192,625 of supported funding, and helped 202 new businesses and 336 entrepreneurs from Black and minoritised backgrounds.
