Sam Bankman-Fried charged with using customer fundsFederal prosecutors have newly indicted Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of FTX cryptocurrency exchange. The indictment alleges that Bankman-Fried used stolen customer funds to contribute over $100 million to political campaigns before the 2022 U.S. midterm elections. This follows earlier charges of siphoning billions from FTX customers to cover losses at his crypto-focused hedge fund, Alameda Research. ㅤ Bankman-Fried's rapid ascent to a net worth of around $26 billion through cryptocurrency booms enabled him to emerge as a significant donor to Democratic candidates and causes. However, FTX's collapse in November 2022, triggered by concerns over the mingling of FTX and Alameda funds, inflicted severe financial and reputational setbacks. The updated indictment alleges that Bankman-Fried leveraged his influence to advocate for regulatory changes conducive to FTX's growth. As the trial date nears on October 2, Bankman-Fried's legal woes intensified with a judge's order for his imprisonment due to potential witness tampering. Anthropic raises $100M from South Korea’s SK TelecomArtificial intelligence startup Anthropic has secured $100 million in funding from SK Telecom, one of the largest mobile carriers in South Korea. According to a press release, the investment comes alongside a partnership between the two companies to develop a multilingual large language model (LLM) for the Telco AI platform. The forthcoming LLM will be available in Korean, English, German, Japanese, Arabic, and Spanish, and allow for the creation of customized AI services for global telecom service providers. “SKT has incredible ambitions to use AI to transform the telco industry,” said Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic. “We’re excited to combine our AI expertise with SKT’s industry knowledge to build an LLM that is customized for telcos.” Additionally, the companies will work together to “fine tune” Anthropic’s latest model Claude 2, which was released on July 11. The funding news comes three months after Anthropic raised $450 million in its Series C funding round led by Spark Capital. Prior to the latest investment, SKT participated in the Series C round via its venture capital arm, SK Telecom Venture Capital. Celsius sends bankruptcy plan to creditor voteBankrupt Celsius Network will begin polling account holders on its plan to restart as a new user-owned company, according to Bloomberg. The crypto lender will start sending ballots to account holders after receiving approval on Monday from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn, who said he would allow Celsius to send ballots to account holders along with voting materials that had "plain language" explanations of the company’s plan to repay its customers. Glenn’s approval is also contingent on the company’s advisers providing additional information about the volatility of the crypto industry, in addition to challenges that its crypto mining operation could face. A Celsius lawyer noted that the company is set to start repaying creditors by the end of this year, according to Bloomberg. Celsius halted withdrawals on June 13, 2022, in the wake of the Terra ecosystem collapse, and filed for bankruptcy a month later. In May, crypto consortium Fahrenheit won the bid to acquire over $2 billion worth of Celsius’ assets and launch a new company. The company, named NewCo, will take over Celsius's institutional loans, private equity, and venture capital investments, as well as $500 million in “liquid cryptocurrency” investments, according to court documents.
