Punishing downpours continued to slam Southern California on Monday after Tropical Storm Hilary – the weakened-but-still-potent remains of what had been a hurricane – made landfall Sunday in Southern California, prompting downpours and flooding. Summed up the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, "All rainfall daily records have been broken." Those totals rainfall prompted a flash flood warning that flashed across phone screens from Malibu to Pomona in the west and east and from Lancaster to Inglewood, north to south. In some areas, it wasn't just a warning. There were more than a dozen reports of flooding across the city, with the Los Angeles River swollen and more than 5,000 Department of Water and Power customers had lost electricity. Boyle Heights and Hollywood were among the hardest-hit areas with outages. Videos posted online showed the Melrose area inundated. But Palm Springs and San Bernardino got the worst of it. Palm Springs and areas to the east of Los Angeles were hit especially hard. Mt. San Jacinto, which towers over the Coachella Valley to its west at nearly 11,000 feet, had clocked 10.17 inches of rain by Sunday evening. Of course, much of that rain ran off the mountain, putting portions of Cathedral City underwater. Multiple roads in the area were washed out and Palm Springs 911 phone service went down, due in part to the surge of calls. Water also rolled toward Palm Springs from the north, as a flash flood hit the Whitewater wash that runs beneath the 10 Freeway. That freeway was closed this morning at Bob Hope Drive due to major flooding. >>>Rainfall Totals, Video More On Hilary: Los Angeles Unified Announces School Closures Amid Tropical Storm Hilary Hurricane Hilary Affecting Los Angeles-Area Events: Hollywood Bowl Shows, MLS Matches Postponed; Magic Mountain, Knotts Closed What Next? Women's World Cup Buoys Fox Hopes - The games were on in the middle of the night in the U.S. and the Americans were eliminated early. (Spain eventually took down England to win the championship.) Fox, which had English-language rights to the Cup in the U.S., describes the time-zone challenges and lack of American presence as "speed bumps." Growing interest in soccer and, more generally, in women’s sports (both of which have been heavily influenced by the USWNT’s previous wins) helped buoy the tournament. The 2026 men's Cup will again be on Fox when it is contested on North American soil. The Women's World Cup host country and TV rights for 2027 have not been finalized. >>> "Breakthrough" 'Blue' B.O. - This weekend’s new movie entries – Warner Bros/DC’s Blue Beetle and Universal’s Strays – delivered softer-than-expected openings of $25.4M and $8.3M. Moviegoing in Los Angeles was limited Sunday by Hurricane Hilary. >>>Analysis Notes On The Season - It appears to be the battle of the Academy viewing portals as final Emmy voting begins. The Television Academy is not only offering the digital ballot to the 20,000-plus eligible voting members, but also a corresponding link to videos of the shows they are being asked to consider. Meanwhile, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has opened its digital viewing portal for Oscar season, which kicks off in earnest in a few days at Venice, Telluride and Toronto (but really is already well in progress thanks to “Barbenheimer”). >>> Digital & Cash-Savvy Systems ‘League Of Their Own’ Benched - Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned. It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed. Both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA work stoppages. Jacobson ripped the purported rationale, saying in an Instagram that blaming the move on the strikes was "bulls--t and cowardly." >>>Strikes And Yer Out? The Film That Lit My Fuse - This week’s subject is Peter Berg, director and executive producer of the Netflix limited series Painkiller about the rise of the opioid crisis. Berg got his break into the business as part of the cast of Chicago Hope, and he transitioned to directing and writing with the buzzy dark thriller Very Bad Things. His films include Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor, Hancock, The Kingdom and Friday Night Lights. The latter he launched as a groundbreaking TV series. >>> Watch The Video |

Davis Guggenheim comes from a prestigious family in terms of legendary documentary filmmakers. His father was the late, great Charles Guggenheim, winner of several Oscars as well as numerous other nominations in the field. Perhaps that is why initially his son ran in another direction in the business, directing episodes of landmark TV series. Eventually, however, he became known for a slew of award-winning docs of his own. Although the last thing Guggenheim thought was that he would be doing a doc on a movie and TV star, that is exactly why he is now at the forefront of the Emmy race with Apple TV+’s Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which has been nominated for seven awards. >>> Innovative Techniques |
