Airport's £1.3bn transformation plan prepares for take off

Holidays start in the airport departure lounge for most of us, so news of expansion at Manchester Airport will be music to the ears of the 24 million-plus passengers passing through each year.

Plans for 27 new shops and restaurants at the new Terminal 2 have been revealed as part of its £1.3bn transformation, with the extended departure lounge set to welcome new features like a food market, boutique high street-style shopping area, champagne bar, artisan cafes and a brasserie.

The airport has now started the tendering process for the units, with a view to announcing the successful applicants by next April. This latest investment will complete the transformation of Terminal 2, leading to 80% of all passengers using it while Terminal 1 will close - 63 years after it was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1962.

Richard Jackson, retail director at Manchester Airport, said: "We are well aware that our guests' holidays start at the airport and we want them to enjoy their time here - whether that means sipping craft beer brewed at the airport in a bar overlooking the airfield, or eating an artisan pizza."

Meanwhile in the Midlands, new images have been released of a planned multi-screen cinema in Lichfield city centre. The CGIs show how the venue could look in the former Debenhams store at the Three Spires shopping centre.

An end occupier of the cinema is still yet to be announced but discussions are in progress, according to the developer behind the scheme. Read more on that plan here.

And in Wales, work has started on a new market for Caerphilly built from shipping containers. The project, Ffos - moat in English - Caerffili, is expected to be completed in October or November.

The Welsh Government is providing 58% of the project's cost with a grant of £2.09m and loan of £600,000 from its Transforming Towns programme. The remainder of the funding will come from the local council and the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund.
