Identification with the macho side of DC's mythology might explain why, of the many superpowered costars here, the expected one is absent. The Shazam of David F. Sandberg's surprisingly charming 2019 film would be welcome, shifting the focus away from revved-up egos and ancient grievances, but no: Don't expect Zachary Levi's boy-turned-hero to show up. We do briefly see the wizard who gave Billy Batson his powers, though. In flashbacks to an ancient Egypt-like kingdom called Kahndaq, a king forces his subjects to toil in mines seeking the magical mineral Eternium. Hoping to start a revolt, a young boy is instead captured. But just as he's about to be executed, wizards rescue him, transforming him into a godlike champion — who immediately destroys the king and his home in a rage-fueled battle. Millennia later, a Kahndaq scholar named Adrianna (Sarah Shahi) hunts for the king's Eternium crown in a forgotten tomb. She finds it, and unwittingly revives the long-dead champion, just as her expedition is ambushed by Intergang, the crew of mercenaries that has terrorized Kahndaq for decades. Violence ensues. Johnson's resurrected warrior, Teth Adam, gets most of his briefing on the modern world from Adrianna's son Amon (Bodhi Sabongui). Mother and son have secretly been working against Intergang, and possessing the magic crown only makes them bigger targets. But Teth Adam cares little about their troubles, and chides the boy for not knowing violence is the answer to such problems. Others take a greater interest. In America, Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) enlists Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan) and some less famous heroes to go retrieve the crown and lock it up. They zip around the globe in a jet whose detachable cockpit would make any billionaire owner of phallic rockets envious, and proceed to behave (to Adrianna's eyes, at least) like enforcers of a paternalistic Western power structure. (The script does little to help non-DC-scholars here, briefly alluding to nanobots and relics and the Justice Society of America as if other movies had introduced them already. With so many new characters in what is basically a two-hour fight scene, there's no place for much exposition.) Hodge brings a hardass edge to Hawkman, a law-and-order guy who's just as stubborn about enforcing the status quo as Teth Adam is about killing anybody who looks at him wrong. The film dramatizes their clashing approaches well while sympathizing with the conflicted people of today's Kahndaq: They sure wanted the West's help when they had no treasures to protect; now, Teth Adam's style holds more appeal. What makes Johnson a magnetic anti-hero, unstable and antisocial. It doesn't fly so much as it shakes the sky; He swats at opponents like bundles of weightless CG pixels. And this passion project introduces the character well, setting him up for adventure one would expect less predictable. And maybe, while Teth Adam slowly assembles a coherent moral worldview over the course of several films, America can get out of its sinister tendency to elect celebrities who have no experience working governments. Black Adam Movie Review From India What goes up, comes down. That may not be something worth repeating, but not when it comes to Black Adam. Its flying men – and there are just too many of them – love to go zooming up and then either chucking people down or each other. It's not even funny the first time round. By the end, it's just painful. A bad plan is better than no plan at all – that is another nugget the film is fond of. But, not really. Sometimes a bad plan is just that, bad. The thing is, Black Adam isn't all bad though. It's fairly entertaining, despite all the smashing and bashing; surprisingly cohesive, in spite of its 5,000-year span; and pretty faithful about sticking to its somewhere-in-the-Middle East milieu given that the setting is the "world's oldest self-governing" civilisation. So the characters are a good mix, with people of different religions, races and colours arrayed on both sides. Black Adam also has just the right amount of fun and games going to lighten the mood of this story from the DC Extended Universe comic franchise, with the Justice League that rushes in to "contain" Black Adam comprising a likable foursome of Hawkman (Hodge), Dr Fate (Brosnan), Cyclone (Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Centineo). They seem like a team that could hang together amiably, which is a comforting thought if the future of the world lies in their hands. The civilians, that is those without the superpowers (and there are a very few of those here), are a family of a young boy (Sabongui, suitably perky), his mother (Shahi) and uncle (Amer), who again are people you would mind coming to harm. Amer is the cliched, overweight, funny sidekick, but somehow he makes it work. As the titular character Black Adam, all Johnson really has to do is thrust his chest out, stare long and hard, and yet look light enough to stand floating in air (which he does a lot, when he is not zooming around, per se). It's unfair to expect anyone to go up against a bareboned 'The Rock', and with him stacked with powers of lightning, flying, fighting, speed, strength, not to mention invincibility to any kind of weapon known to mankind, no one of course stands a chance. So what is Black Adam, helmed by Collet-Serra, trying to do exactly, apart from reiterating the above? So we have a number of clear enemies, and supposed enemies, taking Adam on, only to meet the fate we know is coming. The filmmakers clearly didn't trust the basic storyline enough, and draw the Justice Leaguers in under a pretext that frays very thin, very fast. Something about heroes and real heroes, which loses impact by repetition. There is another parallel storyline about a land and its people, who have been suppressed by "neo-imperialist enforcers". It's clear who their "liberator" is going to be, but the film also wants to be politically correct and have it about the people taking matters in their own hands, which happens sporadically and very sputteringly. Since Black Adam is an origin story, this instalment is clearly just a trailer into all the fighting and smashing that is yet to come. That's an exhausting thought.
