Except probably this one – the funny, quirky, confused Doctor G (Dr Uday Gupta) played by Ayushmann Khurrana. And of course, another trait that stands out in this doc is how he's comfortably unaware of his chauvinism and patriarchal beliefs.  His world revolves around the stree-rog vibhaag of the medical college, though what he is desperately waiting for is to find an exit route from there. From the word go, the world of Anubhuti Kashyap's Doctor G presents one character after another, well-sketched and each with a distinct personality that adds layers to the circumstantial chaos and conflict in Dr Uday's life.  Whether its Dr Jenny Jacob (Priyam Saha), Dr KLPD aka Kumudlatha Pamulparthi Diwakaran (Shraddha Jain), the nurses or Shobha Gupta (Sheeba Chadha as Dr Uday's mom), the women in this story lend a lot of might to the narrative at every stage. The myriad characters bring a certain vibrancy to the story which is set largely in a medical college campus of Bhopal. Together, they beautifully set the mood and tonality of the film – light-hearted, funny and breezy for most part. The makers of this film, Junglee Pictures, who are known to back unique and path-breaking films like Raazi and Badhaai Ho, have attempted to take the audience into a zone which has never been tapped in Hindi cinema before.  Even a sensitive theme like losing the male touch, among some other relevant issues that unfold in the second half, have been effectively portrayed with well-written humour and scenes, which never take the slapstick route. The way comedy has been used is just right, there is never an overdose. Even in scenes where a serious topic is being handled, the impact is strong, but the delivery and performances remain subtle and dignified. What could have become a cut-and-dry hospital comedy turns into an extremely palatable story, with an underlying social message.  The writers, Sumit Saxena, Saurabh Bharat and Vishal Wagh, along with director Anubhuti Kashyap, have made it a point to narrate the story with a neutral gaze which has helped bring in the right elements that make a movie engaging. The music (Amit Trivedi) blends well.  Newton (Altamash Faridi), O Sweetie Sweetie (Ayushmann), Har Jagah Tu (Raj Barman) lend a beautiful touch to the music album while peppy numbers like Step Copy (Amit Trivedi) and Dil Dhak Dhak (Raj Barman, Sakshi Holkar) add some much-needed zing and pep you up. Ayushmann Khurrana is a natural at his act, whether he is the hassled doctor on campus trying to cope with all his women peers, handling the matters of his heart or reasoning with his mother at home on log kya kahenge kind of topics – he is utterly believable, hilarious and on point. Even as his character evolves, he never loses grip.  His performance is lived-in and at par with some of his finer acts in the past. Rakul Preet Singh displays her acting chops beautifully without taking attention away from the central conflict of the movie. She lends excellent support to Ayushmann's character, hand-holding him through his emotional crises and pushing him out of his old-fashioned beliefs and ideas about men and women. Shefali Shah continues her golden run with this film.  Of course, one would have loved to see more of her, but even then, she undoubtedly aces the act, and elevates the film to a different level. Sheeba Chadha brings in a lot of laughs as Uday's progressive mom, who while playing a perfect parent is also trying to live her life with abandon. Anubhuti Kashyap's first mainstream film boasts of her ability to bring out a host of nuanced performances. She shows her potential to direct a story in a manner that can thoroughly engross the audience,  while also taking it in a direction that makes it a conversation-starter for the right reasons. Every character in Doctor G, performs their part finely to pump life into the story. Go, watch this at a theatre near you, sehat ki liye achcha hai! Tags: movie-review

Many of the films which are not the most hit movies of the last 3-4 years are such that the culture of India, the history of India's cultural uniqueness, has been going on keeping the traditions of India in its heart, such a movie is becoming a hit Lal Singh No Chaddha, no Leela, no tandav and nothing happens like not in the film. There is a sitting which is high quality with South films and Indian tradition is going on keeping Indian history in our heart and we must support this tent, so the first film I want to talk about today is Kantara. Plot: Henchman Shiva (Rishab Shetty) lives in a small tribal hamlet with his mother. An unforgettable incident that he had witnessed during his childhood makes him stay away from the traditional Daivaradhane and Bhoota Kola legacy.  He is a vagabond and is happy loafing around with his friends and doing petty jobs for his landlord (Achyut Kumar). When Forest officer Murali (Kishore) enters the scene, it gives a fresh dimension to the man-vs-nature fight. Can Shiva save the forest from Murali? Or is Murali just a dummy bait cast by bigger fish? Kantara Review: Story The story begins in the 18th century when a king gives a piece of land to the tribals in exchange for peace, joy and prosperity. Centuries later, consumed by greed and selfishness, the king's successor tries to threaten villagers during Bhoota Kola to return the land. But his mysterious death puts an end to the debate.  Twenty years later, forest officer Murali, who considers himself the custodian of forest, tries to put an end to 'unscientific rituals' of the forest-dwellers, in a bid to save the forest. But hot-headed Shiva, who believes that the forest does not need to be saved as it is not in danger, takes Murali head on.  Though their intentions are same, their way of dealing with it is poles apart. This results in several heated arguments and fights between the two. Leela (Saptami Gowda), a newly appointed forest guard, is initially caught in the crossfire between the villagers and the forest department. But she quickly takes a stand, which puts Shiva in trouble. Landlord (Achyut Kumar), who is also the successor of the dynasty, and now a local politician, also has his eyes on the ancestral property. Who does the land actually belong to? A predictable storyline that is embellished with technical brilliance to make it a unique experience. Kantara is a Rishab-Shetty-show all the way. He shines as the director as well as the protagonist. The cinematography pulls you into the film and makes you a part of it. The first half has a very engaging storyline and apt comedy with quirky one-liners in coastal dialect.  The second half, however, delves deep into the actual story of culture and tradition, blended with a little bit of mystery. The biggest take away is the pre-climax and climax, which is conceived and performed to perfection. Rishab Shetty's performance in the last 20 minutes is chilling. Since he comes from the coastal region, the mannerisms have come out effortlessly on screen.  The movie shows the hidden, aggressive side of Rishab as an actor. Kishore gives an equally powerful performance as forest officer. His bald, clean-shaven look adds gravitas to his role. Saptami Gowda has nothing impactful to do till the climax and she has put up a decent show.  Achyut Kumar, as a cunning landlord, is a valuable addition. Pramod Shetty, Praveen Tumbe and others have played impactful fillers. The way all these characters come together to tell a compelling story is brilliant. The film is a visual grandeur. DOP Aravind Kashyap has done a brilliant job with lighting and frames. A lot of attention is given to the making, which is dipped in folklore. Situational village comedy works well for the film. The film explores the culture of Tulunadu without any compromise. B Ajaneesh Loknath's music is soothing. With plenty to savour for both mass and class audience, Kantara undoubtedly makes for a wonderful theatrical experience. Tags: movie-review

While Bharat is a Hindu, Sameer is a Muslim. Once Sameer becomes the college leader, the maulana uses him as a pawn to create a rift between Hindu and Muslim students.  Sameer doesn't understand that he is on the wrong path. A Hindu organisation now asks Bharat to contest the college elections. Meanwhile, Sameer is sent to Kashmir by the maulana to create tension there by raising his voice against Article 370. That's when Sameer's Hindu girlfriend, Sapna Gupta (Sonarika Bhadoria), sees the true side of Sameer. Anyway, Sameer's family disowns him because of Sameer's anti-Hindu stance. The selfish maulana also washes his hands off Sameer, now that Sameer has incited the Muslim youth. What happens thereafter? Karan Razdan has written a story and screenplay, which seemingly try to exploit the Hindutva feelings among the Hindu audience. Otherwise, there is precious little in the drama. The screenplay is found lacking in emotions which could draw tears. The climax may not find favour with the hardcore Hindus. Karan Razdan's Hindutva dialogues are very good. Ashiesh Sharma does a fine job in the role of Bharat. Ankit Raaj performs well as Sameer. Sonarika Bhadoria is okay as Sapna. She looks good. Anup Jalota is so-so in a brief role as Bharat's father, Pandit Shastri. Dipika Chikhalia lends average support as Guru Maa. Govind Namdeo (as Bhalerao) makes his presence felt in a role that gives him limited scope.  Surmeet (as Paramjeet Singh), Agast Anand (as Maulana Azam Baig) and Mukesh Tyagi (as Ghulam Rasool) provide fair support. Others are adequate. Karan Razdan's direction is fairly nice. Ravi Shankar's music is average but his background music could've been better. Shweta Raj's lyrics are okay. Sujit Kumar's choreography is functional. Pradeep Khanvilkar's cinematography is of a fine standard. Akhilesh Kumar's art direction is appealing. Rajesh Pandey's editing ought to have been sharper. On the whole, Hindutva may appeal to a section of the audience which wears its religion on its sleeve. But in the final tally, it will end up doing nothing much at the box-office — and the main reason for this is the lack of awareness about the film and its release.
