Idris Elba 'walks away' from 007

Idris Elba

There have been persistent rumours that Idris Elba could be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig stepped down.

The Luther star, 49, is a fan favourite and has been riding high on the bookies' top picks for 007 with William Hill having odds on him bagging the role at 5-2.

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has also previously admitted the actor was "part of the conversation" to take over the role of the infamous spy.

Despite fevered speculation, Elba has now 'walked away' from the role according to insiders.

A source claimed: "Fans and Barbara wanted Idris but he wants to create something for himself. However, he's put forward names to play 007. He's 'informally' in the decision-making process as he's been in talks with producers for so long."

Elba walking away from the role is the latest in shock casting news for the franchise. A source recently claimed that Eon Productions wants the new 007 to be aged under 40 and over 5ft10 – meaning the current favourites for the role will be considered too old.

Craig received Bond advice from Brosnan

Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan

Daniel Craig's predecessor, Pierce Brosnan, could not have been more different. Craig's blonde Bond was gritty and brimming with raw emotion whereas Brosnan's dark-haired Bond was debonair and humorous.

Brosnan carried Bond through the 90s at a time when the franchise was at its silliest and suffering from a huge overuse of CGI.

Die Another Day took outrageous CGI to a whole new level when the finale sees Bond surf on a computer-generated tidal wave.

The franchise was in serious danger of becoming completely removed from reality so it was time for a 007 overhaul with a new actor and some more grounded storylines and character complexities.

Craig brought Bond back from the brink but before he launched onto the big screen he met Brosnan for a much-needed push in the right direction.

During this meeting, Craig received some important wisdom that would sculpt his way of playing the secret agent. Find out what advice Brosnan gave Craig here.
