Historic Donington Hall races into the future through hotel plan

It's been a strong week for the hotels market this week, with a number of deals and developments coming to the fore.

In the week that Travelodge revealed a hotel pipeline representing some £330m investment, it was the quirkier schemes that caught BusinessLive's attention.

In the East Midlands, the company which runs Donington Park race track revealed plans to turn nearby Donington Hall into a luxury  country hotel.

MotorSport Vision (MSV) – co-owned by former-F1 driver Jonathan Palmer – has applied for listed building consent for the grade II listed building, saying it wants to carry out "sensitive refurbishment" of the buildings. Notable deals of the week included the sale of the hotel said to have inspired the adventures of Alice in Wonderland.

The grade II-listed Cowley Manor & Spa in the Cotswolds sold for an undisclosed sum to French hotel group Experimental Group.

The Gloucestershire-based country house hotel, which dates back to the 1860s and is located within 55 acres of gardens, will continue to operate as normal, with all the team remaining in place, following the deal. Read the full story here

Meanwhile in the South West, it emerged that the DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham had collapsed into administration.

Lethendy Cheltenham Limited, which trades as the DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham, was placed into administration on May 19.

Established in 2015, the traditional Georgian manor house hotel, on Cirencester Road, was the first in Hilton's portfolio to open in Cheltenham, and underwent a full refurbishment in 2017.

According to the administrators, the hotel is currently trading profitably, and Quantuma is planning to continue running the business while it looks for a buyer. Read more on that story here

And the latest transformation for a former Debenhams store could see an empty one in the West Midlands turned into a cinema and leisure complex.

Evolve Estates is drawing up the plans after acquiring the Three Spires centre in Lichfield, signing a deal to work with the district council on new regeneration proposals for the city centre site. Read more on that story here
