Welcome to your BusinessLive North West weekend newsletter

Welcome to the latest edition of our BusinessLive North West weekend email newsletter - a chance to get up to speed on what's been happening - as well as a look at what's to come.

It was a big week for one of the North West's largest companies as JD Sports finally revealed its delayed full-year results.

The Bury-headquartered giant posted profits of almost £950m while its revenue surged to £8.5bn.

The results came after Peter Cowgill suddenly quit his role as executive chairman after leading the business for the last 18 years.

JD Sports was also fined £4.3m in February for exchanging information with Footasylum, which it had agreed to buy at the time for £90m.

It was rapped by the CMA again earlier this month when it confessed to "cartel activity" in illegally fixing the retail prices of a number of Rangers-branded replica kits.

But the huge profits and sales figures were not the only headline-grabbing lines revealed by JD Sports this week.

Buried deep at the bottom of its accounts was the news that it had bought a group founded by former Olympic swimmers Steve Parry, Rebecca Adlington and Adrian Turner in a deal which could be worth up to £15m.

Turning to the world of tech, Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo and luxury car maker Bentley both announced plans to up on the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) bandwagon this week.

The Portugal star has signed up to crypto platform Binance to launch an exclusive multi-year partnership with the first NFTs due to be put on sale later this year.

On the same day, Bentley announced its NFTs, which will be limited to 208, will all be carbon neutral.

The automotive giant said the Bentley NFT will be a unique artwork created by Bentley Design and will offer "unique access and exclusive rewards to holders".

The jury may still be out on whether NFTs are a worthwhile investment but that looks to not have stopped two of the North West's most well-known names taking the plunge.

In the wake of Matt Fitzpatrick triumphing at golf's US Open last weekend, BusinessLive secured an exclusive interview with the co-founder of his name sponsor, Castore.

Tom Beahon established the fast-growing company in Liverpool alongside his brother before relocating its headquarters to Manchester last year.

The entrepreneur explained why the sportwear brand is doubling down on its expansion plans despite the current economic challenges and what impact Fitzpatrick's major win will have on the company.

And finally, I'd like to point you to our weekly feature interview.

This week BusinessLive sat down with a Manchester private equity boss to discuss the positives, and perceived negatives, of founders accepting external investment.

Inflexion's Chris Wright also talked about how private equity "can be a force for good" and how opportunities will continue to pop up to back ambitious entrepreneurs in the city despite the country's current economic woes.
