Barbara Broccoli says casting decision will require 'a whole rethink of where we're going'

Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson at Macbeth opening night

Producer Barbara Broccoli has given an update on the search for the next 007, hinting that it might be a while until we get a new Bond.

Since Daniel Craig stepped down from the role, speculation has been ramping up over who will replace him and several actors are rumoured to be in the running for the coveted role.

Craig has begun performing as Macbeth on Broadway in New York, his first post-Bond gig.

The actor kept up stage roles in his 007 years, including Sam Gold's production of Othello in 2016 and with wife Rachel Weisz, 52, in Harold Pinter's Betrayal in 2013.

This new production of Shakespeare's drama has a number of Bond connections in addition to its lead. Both Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing the play while costumes are designed by Suttirat Larlarb, creator of No Time To Die's garments.

At the glitzy opening night this week, Broccoli was of course asked for any updates on the next Bond.

Broccoli admitted outside the Longacre Theatre: "It's a big decision. It's not just casting a role. It's about a whole rethink about where we're going. I'm just here celebrating one of the greatest actors on the planet, Daniel Craig."

Her comments come after studio MGM's boss Pamela Abdy confirmed late last year that the field is "wide open" for the next Bond.

"We've had very early preliminary conversations with Barbara [Broccoli] and Michael [Wilson], but we wanted Daniel to have his last hurrah," she said.

In terms of who could play the next Bond, producers have recently confirmed that 007 will remain male, but he can be played by an actor of any race.

Long-lost Moonraker script has been found

James Bond Moonraker: Roger Moore and Lois Chiles

A long lost Moonraker script written by 007 creator Ian Fleming himself has resurfaced recently and details a very different Bond and storyline in the author's own version of the film.

Fleming was very keen on getting 007 to the movies. So much so that in a recent report from The Guardian, it was revealed that a 150-page document outlining how Fleming wanted to adapt Moonraker into a feature film had entered the collection of an antiquarian book shop.

This document is extremely significant as it's Ian Fleming's only screenplay and there are many differences between Fleming's treatment and the eventual film written by Christopher Wood.

One of the more important changes in Fleming's work is that the head of the British secret intelligence service is not called "M". Moneypenny is also absent in this storyline.

Despite being keen to see Bond on the big screen, Fleming had to wait until 1962 to see any of his novels adapted for cinema.

Albert ("Cubby") Broccoli and Harry Saltzman adapted his 1958 novel Dr No for the now-iconic film starring Sean Connery, which was recently re-released in the cinema to celebrate 60 years of Bond.

All 12 of the Bond novels eventually ended up as movies in the franchise, although many strayed from Fleming's original plots.

Regé-Jean Page becomes 'the one to beat'

Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page has been the favourite in the Bond odds for months now

Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page has been the favourite in the Bond odds for months now, and it looks like some new film news has launched him to the top of the 007 leaderboard.

The official announcement of the next James Bond will likely come by the end of the year and in the meantime, bookies are changing up the odds on a regular basis as to who will take over.

A number of household names are in the running to become Bond in the coming months and speculation is running wild.

Venom star Tom Hardy has long been one of the top contenders for the role and currently has 8/1 from Ladbrokes.

The British actor has become a favourite with 007 fans - but he has confessed he will "not" talk about the possibility. Unfortunately, the actor's position has not changed in the Bond odds for some time now.

At the top of the board right now is Regé-Jean Page who is best known for the Netflix period drama smash Bridgerton.

The actor has new 2/1 odds from Ladbrokes on becoming the next 007, better odds than ever.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said of these odds: "Regé-Jean Page is very much the one to beat in the race to replace Daniel Craig as 007."

These odds follow the first image from Netflix's new movie The Gray Man, which is causing a stir on social media.

The Gray Man is the first Netflix film being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and has a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling, Captain America star Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Regé-Jean Page.

This much-hyped film is said to have increased Page's chances of securing the Bond role partly because the man looms so dapper in a suit in the promo pics.
