On December 29, 1970, Aled Jones was born. He was the only child of Nest Rowlands, a teacher, and Derek John Jones, a shipbuilder's draughtsman, and was born in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, Wales. Aled joined Bangor Cathedral's choir when he was nine years old, and within two years he was the lead soloist. At the Urdd Eisteddfod in 1982, Aled won the Cerdd Dant solo events for contestants under the age of 12. In 1985, at the age of 14, he had a top 5 success with his version of 'Walking in the Air.'
He was raised in Llandegfan, Anglesey, in a tiny Welsh-speaking village, and attended Ysgol David Hughes (a secondary school). Jones entered Bangor Cathedral's choir when he was nine years old and became lead soloist within two years, however, he was never Head Chorister. Hefina Orwig Evans, a member of the church, was so taken with Jones' treble voice that she wrote a letter to record label Sain, and he was promptly signed. Aled Jones made his acting debut in Shaun McKenna's adaption of Richard Llewellyn's How Green Was My Valley at the Royal Theatre in September 1990, playing the adolescent Huw Morgan.
Aled Jones went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before embarking on an adult recording career, showcasing his developed baritone voice in mostly religious/inspirational material. He toured the UK with the book in November and December 2010. His CD, "Aled's Christmas Gift," was released on November 20 to go along with the book. Following the resignation of Sarah Kennedy, he was confirmed on October 11, 2010, to take over as stand-in presenter of BBC Radio 2's early morning breakfast slot, a post he has covered on occasion in the years preceding up to her departure. He took up this spot for six weeks, till his UK tour began.
